Life and other challenges slowed down the completion of Kowalski, but I’m happy with the results. I am a bit worried that the connection between the lamp shade (still) and the stage (barrel raft) holds up. The stage is also going to swing a lot if there is any wind. We will see how it deals with the test of time.
The design on this one took a more complicated path. The idea for a still lampshade came early and I was able to design this one with Blender without too much trouble. I went through numerous passes for the stage/raft. I originally wanted to design a raft that looked like one used on Gilligan’s Island. But, I couldn’t pull it off. I haven’t been very successful making complex shapes in blender. Maybe one day.

I ended up finding a model for the raft online. Printed and painted that. The mount to the lamp shade involves small, jewelry eye screws and some metal wire. I have a bad feeling I’m going to find Kowalski shattered on the ground one day… That said, maybe I’ll get lucky. My walkway lanterns are almost 3 years old and seem to be holding up very well.
Coming up next, is Private. I’m well underway painting private, but the lamp has gone through numerous design changes as I try to figure out what I can do and what I’ll like. I have a current idea that is going to involve making molds and resin casting. If it works, I’ll have picked up a new skill by the time I’m done. At the moment, it is still in the early stages, so it may be awhile before it is done. In parallel, I have some Halloween projects going on in parallel and painting the electrical box that will house the patio receiver.
